Q. How do people decide who needs charity?

Q. How much of the money gets to the needy?

Q. How do we know it goes to good use and is well managed?

These are questions that I asked myself on a frequent basis. When I stumbled on an orphanage for disabled children and saw the plight and work the few staff were doing I realized they were not so much questions , but a way of turning a blind eye and to give myself piece of mind, suddenly and shockingly I found myself standing staring the needy in the face with no escape , nowhere to run, these questions were nowhere to help me. I somehow needed answers. Sitting opposite the Deputy Head of the school with tears in her eyes describing her daily work and dedication of her staff to helping the children against all the odds.

How did I get in the above situation?

Through my work I have become good friends with Romenas, he has always told me his mother is the deputy headmaster of a school for children in Lithuania. He needed some papers from his government and I went with him for three days where we were well looked after and taken for some splendid meals, during one of the meals I noticed we were in a room used by the International Rotarians and found that one of the party was indeed a member, and we got onto general chat about raising funds, etc, it became apparent very quickly, even with the best intention in the world, if you have no surplus cash you cannot donate to good causes, around this time in the conversation Birute, the mother of Romenas asked why don't I help her school, it then dawned on me, as she explained it was not a normal school, there are 142 students with special needs, most of the students come from disadvantaged families who are unable to take care of their children, so they live in. Birute has worked with these children for most of her life, but still moved to tears when she described the living conditions of these children, for me it was a large step in my life, it became time to do something to help for people I didn't even know.

These children, possibly will never be in a position to fully help themselves and will depend on this school and its kind staff from the age of three through to adulthood, this is their home. They have the support of kind, loving and caring staff. With your help the home can be repaired and made into a warm and safe place for these children.

My assessment is that if you give clothes, although they are needed, only one child benefits, if you give food, although it is needed, it sustains one child for one meal, if you restore their house and give them a solid roof, clean living conditions, nice bright walls, new kitchen this will better the lives of many for many years to come. Of course my assessment about clothes and other items is completely wrong, as they need everything. As my experience is in the building industry, this is where my expertise can help, together with my qualifications in photography, K.I.N.D is going to be a charity that aims to restore peoples lives by restoring their living surroundings and making them as comfortable as possible, we have accepted the help of other people and organizations that can help us where we have no experience, and we thank them for that help. We will run this project directly and assessing where the money should be spent step by step. All the construction work will be done to a good standard as we don't believe cutting costs in the wrong place is the long term solution. The project will be covered by photography and loaded onto this page so that anyone with any interest can follow the progress.

We must give our special thanks to Fiona Delaney who has thrown massive personal effort into the project ,working with the Ice Gems Cheerleading Squad and connecting with Ikea and the Milton Keynes newspaper, The Citizen, England, to put in a half page appeal (above) for equipment, clothes and other items. Sally Murrer has done the article above in the most kind way for our appeal.

Fiona can be contacted directly on 0044 07707 338 649.

The Ice Gems Cheerleading Squad work as a group to give young people hope and enjoyment through cheerleading and have begun a project for a drum line, and are themselves in need of equipment and funds. They have achieved National Awards and we believe should be supported.

The local council and government are working in a very positive way to do everything in their power to repair the school and have begun to do works, working directly with the school, we can put our funds into the places where it is needed that does not fall into government criteria, example, the government changed the roof and windows and where the landscape was churned up by machinery and building work we have put forward 1000 euros to re-landscape the area.

The general condition of the building itself is in a dire state of repair, but mainly on a maintenance level, the photos of the steps above show two of the main entrances.

The footpaths on the grounds have spread over years and need lifting and replacing, although the Government have pledged work and funds, some areas do not fall into the category for funding, this footpath being one example, you must remember children from the age of three years old with severe learning difficulties cannot work out to step over the gaps and fall on a regular basis. For many months of the year the hazard of frost and snow add to the danger.

All doors in the building are deemed as adequate and usable, as they open and close. The photo on the left above shows the main hall doors and they have no handles and been repaired many times.

The photo on the right above is the dining room, this carpet, we believed when we saw it, was being rolled up and replaced, it had, in fact, just been donated and being put down to begin its new life.

These are the stools that are used as dining room furniture, they have three legs, no backs and have so many splinters, I wouldn't like the job of even carrying one without the danger of injury. There are 140 children, you are looking at about half of the dining room furniture.

The kitchen is also an area that does not fall into the category of Government funding, officially not enough children of the 140 need to eat in, although this does not take into consideration if they are being fed well elsewhere. The cooking equipment, as the photo on the right shows has no knobs and should be in a museum, but are kept very clean by the staff, reducing the danger of using them.

Photo above shows ill fitting doors and panels. .......................Photo above shows hot plate, no controls.

This iron bath on the left is where the washing up is done, its very easy to use, you simply kneel on the floor and lean over the side, it has the luxury of an out-dated hot water boiler, this is extremely hard work on the staff's knees and back.

After dinner the children can wash and clean up for the afternoon. Some have washing facilities in their rooms (photo on the right) cold tap only, Lithuania this winter reached minus 40 degrees.

The older children are lucky enough to have wood work classes using the machines above, the machine on the left is a 12 inch circular bench saw with no guards, the lathe on the right would fetch good money at an antique market. In the west we would be horrified to see children using these machines with severe disabilities. The school are very glad that they have been able to acquire and maintain this equipment and feel it would be worse to have none.

In the classrooms most of the furniture is in a state of collapse through age, not misuse, only through the determination of the staff and children is it kept usable by constant repairs.

We live in a world where we possibly throw in the bin waste food and packaging to more than the value of the chair and table on the right, this costs 50 euros in Lithuania for the set, 30 English Pounds. Half the children now have furniture in their class and no longer sit on the floor, or use dangerous, broken items. With the help of Fiona Delaney and the Ice Gems of Milton Keynes, furniture and general living items are moving forward at a pace.

Since we began this project the local Government has replaced the roof on the main building, has changed the windows and has plans to re-wire the electrics, but is limited by funds. The national average wage being under one pound sterling per hour, things are changing rapidly in a very positive direction and in a few years will be full members of the E.U. We don't feel that these children should be the last in the country to benefit and feel that help now will go four times further than when the country is a full member state and prices risen.

You can help to raise these children to a comfortable life. The restoration of these buildings will have a direct impact on the lives of these children.

You have the power to give them a brighter future .

Please donate kindly.

We have been working on this project collecting information, official requests for help and the beginnings of fund raising. Fiona Delaney has kindly stepped in to help with gifts and much needed items. For the restoration of the building itself and transport costs, the bank account below is set up to receive funds at the lowest rate by La Caixa, Spain.

Although the project is in it's infancy it has begun, it is a small project on a world scale, but direct and working to the benefit of mankind.

Please donate, your donations will be gladly accepted, we have found small amounts on a regular basis are substantial and will help the project move forward, if you are an individual and would like to help, even the smallest donations will be kindly received and will make the most massive difference.

Payments can be made directly into a bank account set up specifically for this project, simply give these details to your local bank.

The local government in the area have raised the funds and replaced the roof, the windows and have plans to re-wire the school, and working together we have sent 1000 euros to repair the landscape and gardens upset by the building work. Their interest and help is very positive, as they have many projects to find funds for.
Thanks to M & J Transport for their support and helping with complicated paperwork regarding export and transport.
THE ICE GEMS CHEERLEADING SQUAD, Milton Keynes have put special effort into this project, our thanks to Fiona Delaney and all her team and friends.
